Habits of Waste

You Matter. Empowering individuals to take action for collective change.

Our mission: Cleaning up the planet one “habit of waste” at a time.

We believe in the power of one.

Something has to change. Something has to move us from unconscious trend to conscious action.

The non-profit organization Habits of Waste is focused on changing people’s habits by encouraging everyone to rethink wasteful behavior.

“It’s so embedded in our daily routine, it’s so normal that we don’t even see it,” says Habits of Waste founder, Sheila Morovati. She seeks to raise awareness of the dangers of a throwaway society, foster grass roots change and help everyone become aware of the power they have to influence others.

Your individual impact goes much farther than you think, it creates social impact. If you start a step to change the world you may not notice how many other people are affected and can help spread change with you. Think about how quickly news travels, how an item can become a trend, how tiny coins add up to big savings in a piggy bank. Every social movement and impact starts with the power of one. One person can make serious change with a simple step, a little leap, or by creating a new habit.

HoW Can I Make A Difference?

Every small step makes a giant impact. An astronaut shared his experience as he left the Earth’s atmosphere and looked at our planet from above for the first time. He showed us an image of something you don’t see everyday. It was a green glowing halo that surrounds our gorgeous planet, its ratio being equivalent to the skin of an apple. Minuscule and delicate…. very delicate.

This halo is us, it is our atmosphere. This is where we live, breathe, eat, sleep, work, love, learn, fight wars, make peace and sadly where we are destroying our planet. That view is what brought this astronaut to realize that if it weren’t for this halo, the Earth would be one giant dead rock. Preserving that halo is our job. Be a HoW Changer by checking out how changing your small habits of waste can create a large cultural shift to a much greener and cleaner world.

A message from our founder

Having access to a crayon may seem natural but many of the children we work with have never owned even one crayon. By shifting the wasteful behavior of tossing still good crayons we are able to provide millions of crayons + our art education program to the most underserved schools in the United States and beyond our borders. I am determined to ensure that every child around the world has access to crayons and creativity despite their socio-economic position. We hope you enjoy taking a few moments to learn about our work and consider participating in this initiative in your community.
